Welcome to ISPE-17 Niagara-on-the-Lake!

Greetings Colleagues: After a period of various problems with which we are all familiar, it’s time to meet in person!   Nonetheless, the current Omicron outbreak is something we are monitoring—it is currently spreading rapidly in Ontario, Canada. As has been apparent for some time, we are dealing with unprecedented contingencies, but we appreciate your patience. Our collective safety is the priority!

Welcome to the 17th International Symposium on Polymer Electrolytes (ISPE-17). ISPE-17 is a gathering of scientists and engineers from around the world that highlights state-of-the-art research and development of next-generation electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices such as lithium secondary batteries, redox flow batteries, fuel cells, and beyond.

ISPE-17 will carry on the tradition of being a multidisciplinary meeting at the frontiers of organic, inorganic and polymer chemistry with broad international participation covering everything from the fundamental understandings of novel materials, theoretical and modeling contributions, to applied studies, such as materials performance, durability, safety, and device fabrication.  Polymer electrolytes and their applications are a continually expanding field and we hope this meeting brings new ideas and new young researchers into the community. Our goal is to host robust discussions on topics including new electrolytes for batteries, fuel cell and redox flow battery membranes and the expanding application areas, such as electrosynthesis, electrochemical desalination and separations, and a host of other ‘services’ enhanced by using our polymeric ion conductors.

This year’s conference will mark the 33rd anniversary since the first ISPE was held in St Andrews, UK, in 1987. The symposium has been mostly held biennially since, visiting 5 different continents and the following hosting venues: Siena, Italy (1989); Annecy, France (1991); Newport, Rhode Island, US (1994); Uppsala, Sweden (1996); Hayama, Kanagawa, Japan (1998); Noosa, Queensland, Australia (2000); Santa Fe, New Mexico, US (2002); Mrągowo, Poland (2004); Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil (2006); Ofir, Portugal (2008); Padua, Italy (2010); Selfoss, Iceland (2012); Geelong, Australia (2014); Uppsala, Sweden (2016); Yokohama, Japan (2018). It is our great pleasure to bring ISPE to Canada for the first time.

We are looking forward to seeing you in Niagara-on-the-Lake in 2022!
